We are publishing the train schedule for the route Vienna – Sarajevo – Vienna effective from October 15, 1884.
From the history of building narrow gauge railway tracks with a width of 0.76 m
After the Berlin Congress of 1878, Bosnia and Herzegovina came under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It was decided to construct a railway along the Bosna River from Posavina toward the capital city of Sarajevo, which would serve for the transportation of military troops and logistics. The best solution for building the narrow-gauge railway was a route through Slavonski Brod and Bosanski Brod. The construction of the railway began in September 1878. The section from Bosanski Brod to Zenica was completed in June 1879. By July 1879, a steel bridge over the Sava River between the two Brods was opened for public traffic. In February 1881, work began on the section from Zenica to Sarajevo, and was completed on October 5, 1882.
With the opening of this narrow-gauge railway to regular public traffic, the Sarajevo line and its residents could travel to Vienna and Budapest. Attached you can see the timetable plan effective from October 15, 1884. Click on the image to enlarge for a better view.
