History of the Elementary School in Semizovac

The timeline of the elementary school in Semizovac reveals a great deal about the survival of this small but significant educational institution over more than 105 years of its existence. Through two world wars, various armies that occupied its premises, its relocation to the building of the former hospital, and all the way to the swinging bell used by the teacher to summon students to enter the school and continue their education—often interrupted by different wars and historical hardships.

This educational institution repeatedly revealed one singular strength: to continue its work and lay the foundations of quality upbringing and education for many generations of students. It is precisely in those moments between historically turbulent times and wars, which this region has always been filled with, in those complicated eras—what is now only written history, a few photographs, or part of dusty archival materials—that memories of all teachers and students are contained, as well as the kids who left a part of their childhood in the classrooms of this school.

Even after the last war, when the school building was found in a devastated state, well-meaning people—local residents of all ages—along with donations and the Municipality of Vogošća, found the strength once again to prepare the elementary school in Semizovac for operation. Today, it is called the “Ef. Ramić Family” Elementary School in Semizovac, and although the smile of young Ahmed Ramić will never be heard in any of the classrooms of the rebuilt school, memories of him and the family of the imam Ramić will always remain. New generations of students will discover knowledge in the classrooms of this school, enjoy during the big and small breaks, grow up slowly, probably without even dreaming of its interesting and turbulent history…

A strange, mysterious, and tumultuous history of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to unfold, just like the Vremeplov of the elementary school in Semizovac.
