From history:
The narrow gauge railway Gabela – Ploče began construction in 1939 and was put into service on November 25, 1942, and was discontinued on November 30, 1966. Since December 1, 1966, a standard gauge railway Sarajevo – Ploče – Sarajevo has been in operation.
The towns have changed their names several times throughout history. On old maps, it was called Ploče, named after a characteristic huge slab by the coast. Between the two World Wars, the name was changed to Aleksandrovo, after King Alexander Karađorđević. During Italian occupation in World War II, the Italians introduced the name Porto Tolero on maps. Later, during the time of SFRY, the name was reverted to Ploča (singular) and then to Ploče (plural). The towns bore the name Kardeljevo twice, from 1950 to 1954 and from 1980 to 1990, named after the prominent revolutionary and communist, Slovenian Edvard Kardelj. Between 1954 and 1980, and again from 1991 onward, the old name Ploče was restored.
